Gen Dapong Ratanasuwan of the MNRE yesterday (June 10) revealed thtat there needs to be a reduction in marine debris in Phuket and that cooperation is required from the public, tourists and tourism entrepreneurs in the area.
He has said that public cooperation is considered crucial to conserving coastal and marine resources as well as natural tourism attractions, which are the one of the main sources of income for the province.
The MNRE Minister mentioned that the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) is now gearing up to impose regulations that will require all tourist boats and fishing vessels to have rubbish bins on board, before entering national park areas in an attempt to reduce marine debris dispersed into the sea.
Marine debris, such as rubbish and seine fishing nets, severely impact marine ecology as they damage coral reefs which are the breeding ground for many marine animals. Consumption of the rubbish and seines have also caused a number of fatalities in marine animals as well.
