Rescue workers arrived at the scene, on Baan Pa Krong Cheep Rd, at 11pm and transported local resident Phumarin Chiewwit, 18, who had suffered scrapes all over his body, a shoulder injury and a broken left leg, to Thalang Hospital.

The tree also crushed a fence and struck a parked six-wheeled truck belonging to the Civil Defense Volunteers office for Thepkassattri subdistrict.

Officials took two hours to clear the tree from the road.

Lt Suporn Muangkhai of the Thalang Police noted that the area has no street lights.

“And after so much rain, the ground around the tree could no longer support te weight of the tree,” he said.

Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong and many other provincial departments issued a severe weather warning to residents yesterday.

In issuing the weather warning, effective for August 7-9, Gov Nisit urged motorists to be careful and for residents to be aware of flash floods and landslides that might occur. (See story here.)
