Officials sealed off about one kilometre of the road after a landslide toppled trees, street lights and live electricity supply cables last night (August 10), said Chairat Kumbaan of Wichit Municipality.

“Officials are working on clearing the road and we will have it open again by Thursday (August 13),” he said.

Signs have been posted to warn drivers of the danger ahead and informing them that the road is closed, he added.

“The road is closed from Soi Pracha Saeree to the turn-off to the Khao Khad View Point,” said Kamron Litlert, an engineer of Wichit Municipality’s public works division.

“All residents and tourists are advised to use the main road past Thai Sarco to cape Panwa instead.”

Officers from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Phuket office are keeping an eye on the area in case another landslides occurs, Mr Kamron added.

Soonthon Kaenson, Assistant Chief Engineer of Wichit Municipality, said his team had identified three major spots in the area that are prone to landslides due to the slope of the embankments.

“Wichit Municipality is considering shoring up the embankments with concrete to prevent future landslides,” he said.
