Phuket in for three days of heavy weather

PHUKET: Red “no swimming” flags were deployed on many beaches in Phuket today after the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a “red” dangerous weather warning for the three days from today until Saturday, for Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket and Krabi.

The TMD warned that there will be heavy rain and waves in the Andaman Sea of three metres or more, and said small boats should not go out to sea.

In Rawai, fishermen moved their boats and equipment onto the shore for protection as waves buolt up. Tour boats, however, continued to go out into Phang Nga Bay from Rawai, though their numbers were reduced, and services between Phuket and Phi Phi were canceled.

Despite the red flags, some tourists were still seen going into the sea at Karon and other beaches.
