Phuket in blackout as storm fells tree, power lines

PHUKET: Tropical storm Vamco over the South China Sea is to blame for heavy rain and wind that brought down a tree and caused a power outage in central Phuket’s Srisoonthorn area last night (Sept 16).

Thalang police were called to the scene, on Srisoonthorn Rd about 100 metres before Baan Manik, where the tree had brought down power lines across the road, blocking both lanes of traffic.

Srisoonthorn Municipality officials were forced to shut off the power supply before safely removing the tree and clearing the road, an endeavour that took about half an hour.

Meanwhile, Chalong residents along Soi Taiad and along Chao Fa East Rd to the Soi Palai intersection were left without power from 4:30pm to 9pm as the heavy rains lashed the island.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued another severe weather advisory at 4am today (Sept 17), urging residents to beware isolated heavy to very heavy rain.

As the strong southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea and the South of Thailand, strong wind waves are expected up to three meters high in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.

All ships should proceed with caution over the next two days, said the warning.
