Phuket holey road blamed for woman dead, man injured in motorbike crash

PHUKET: One woman has died and a man remains in hospital after they fell from their motorbike on Srisoonthorn Rd on Tuesday night (July 12). Local residents blame large potholes in the road and poor street lighting for the accident, one of many in recent nights.

Lt Santichai Srimai of the Thalang Police was called to the scene, a section of roadworks west of the Heroines Monument, at 11pm.

Police arrived with Kusoldharm rescue workers to find a Yamaha motorbike lying on the road. Nearby were Pisit Thongkam 21, the driver of the motorbike, and his passenger, Anongwadee Boonsop, 24.

“Both were taken to Thalang Hospital. Mr Pisit is still receiving treatment for his wounds, but Ms Anongwadee suffered a serious head injury and died in the emergency room,” Lt Santichai said.

“We were told that the couple left Cherng Talay on the motorbike. When they got to the area where the road was under construction to expand the lanes, Mr Pisit lost control of the vehicle and crashed due to the condition of the road,” he said.

No helmets were found at the scene, he added.

“Residents said that the road has too many potholes and no street lights,” Lt Santichai said.

“Every night motorbikes crash there, they said, and on July 11 several people were injured because they crashed their motorbikes in this area,” he added.

“The residents said they had asked the authorities to take care of this road and repair the surface so motorists can travel safely, but so far nothing has been done,” he added.

Corruption wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it? Just a thought...

Ed Sanders, Agree, and that road never had enough traffic to warrant a 4 lane highway, just drivers were forced to drive at reasonable speeds and not run over irritatingly slower motorcycles. Oh, the horror of forced consideration!!
This widening is all about accommodating taxis and their super-sonic need to get from point A to point B. No thought at all to the very possible scenario one day there will be no more fares.
After over 10 years of observations as an adult, and several years as a child in Bangkok where both my sister and I suffered completely avoidable accidents due to the Thai mindset, I truly believe the southern heritage, tropical Thai mind is incapable of future consideration. The tropical culture has abundant food year round and thus never needing to plan for future survival, the brain never developed the facility to do so-hence the term, Banana Republic.

Yes Christy... and I was just mentioning that the last of the tree tunnel is probably on the chopping block too. It is the only remaining section of the road that has not been uglified like every other roadway in Phuket. This place is completely void of aesthetic consideration in their development...from jamming the excessively wide roads to the doorsteps of the properties along the roadway, to the proliferation of square ugly buildings that are nothing but fast and cheap to throw up. It is actually quite amazing how people could take somewhere as beautiful as Phuket and develop it into the island of ugly streetscapes. As with most elements here, people who allow this are just trashing this place.

This is where they cut down dozens if not a hundred mature, healthy trees that formed a lovely shade tunnel in order to widen the road and "make it safer."
When (or if) completed, I fully expect fatalities to rise proportionally to the increased speed a two lane road allows for-just like on the east side of Heroine's Monument.
Build it and they will wreck on it.

A motorist, no matter he is thai or foreigner has to adjust to safe speed driving, adjusted to road conditions.
Loosing 'drive control' is up to the driver, not the weather or road condition.
Everywhere are speed limit advice signs, nobody pays attention to that.
And of course everybody on a motorbike should wear a helmet.

Potholes during heavy rain period are a big problem on Phuket.
It seems very hard for authorities to check and repair adequately, even when the local thai residents inform/ask them.
Is it laziness or lack of job professionalism?
I feel for the thai residents, they must feel sometimes frustrated.
