At 12.40 today (January 14) police received a call from the clinic reporting that what appeared to be a grenade had been found inside an old tyre next to the entrance of the clinic.
It was spotted by a patient who ran back inside and told staff “There’s a grenade outside!”
Patients and staff were evacuated from the building while an Explosive Ordnance Department (EOD) expert examined the gold-coloured device.
After gingerly checking it out, the experts were able to give the all-clear. The object was not a grenade, they said, but a cigarette lighter in the shape of a grenade.
Police said they were relieved that the device was not a real grenade, but are examining CCTV footage to see if they can identify the person who left it outside the clinic – and ask them some hard questions.
