Joel Reyes, 63, former governor of Palawan province, and his brother, Mario JR Reyes, 54, former mayor of Coron, were arrested in Phuket on Sunday (Sept 20).

The Reyes brothers today (Sept 23) were being detained at Chalong Police Station, confirmed Chalong police investigator Pol Lt Col Jamroon Plaiduang.

“Right now, we are waiting for court documents at Chalong Police Station. Then, both men will be handed over to Phuket Immigration, who will handle the deportation,” Pol Lt Col Jamroon told The Phuket News.

The deportation of the Reyes, the alleged masterminds of the killing of broadcaster and environmental activist Gerry Ortega, has been tentatively set for Thursday (Sept 24), according to the Philippines’ Justice Secretary, Leila de Lima, reports the Inquirer.

De Lima, in an interview with reporters, said Philippine National Police operatives will fetch the Reyes brothers in Bangkok, and escort the suspects back to the country. (See story here.)
