Village CC, Thai Locals Paan and Pao bowled well, dismissing both opening batsmen in the first two overs. A strong performance by the remainder of the team ensured a defendable total was posted, being the highest score during 1st innings this season by any team, 350/8 after 40 overs. Both teams were lacking many of their regular players, busy with work, travel commitments or out with injuries.
Patong sought the services of two teenage brothers from Victoria, Australia, Mitchell Barrington 15yrs and Tyson 17yrs. The Barrington family had been in Thailand on holidays and playing cricket in the 28th Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes. Their team ‘Hit n Miss’ were successful in their first tour, winning the ‘plate’ division.
Village could only field a team of 7 players, so there were lots of gaps between the fielders at the Alan Cooke Ground. Seemant Raju was bowled for a first ball duck by S ‘Paan’ Sriwang, the middle stump cartwheeling out of the pitch. Mustaq caught and bowled 4, by T ‘Pao’ Suttiprapha at the end of the next over.
Stuart Hamilton and Dave Thomas compiled 38 runs before Thomas was caught by T Donovan for 12 off the bowling of Pao. This bought Tyson Barrington to the wicket and he made 47 runs with Hamilton until Hamilton was caught by Paan for 60 (38 balls) off the bowling of Village Captain Mudasir Rehman.
Mitchell joined his brother scoring 71 runs in a partnership of class batting. Tyson out for 53 (29 balls), at the end of the 17th over, Patong, 5/174. Neil Quail joined Mitchell and put another 88 runs to the total before Mitchell was dismissed on 63 (49 balls) just before the 3rd drinks break.
Quail was caught and bowled by Pao for 62 (55 balls). Owen Pringle chimed in with a quick fire 21 off 13 balls. Richard Desmond unbeaten on 39 (29 balls), and Paul Baker not out 1.
Village bowling Paan 8 overs 2/65, Pao, 8 overs 2/54, T. Donovan 5 overs 0/41, Andy Ghadge, 4 overs, 0/46, M. Rehman, 8 overs 2/58.
Tony Donovan and Mike Khan opened the batting for Village after the luncheon break. Donovan was bowled twice by Mustaq. The first off a no ball (front foot), then out in the same over for 12. Khan was the next to go in a steady procession of wickets for 7, caught by Tyson Barrington off his brother Mitchell’s bowling.
Pao was caught by Desmond for 5 off the bowling of Tyson Barrington. The village Captain Rehman made a quick 12 before being caught by Hamilton off the bowling of Mitchell Barrington.
Paan and Andy Ghadge made a 46 run partnership before Paan was caught by Desmond of the bowling of Mustaq for 15. Ghadge was joined by debutant Peter Khan (son of opening bat Mike). Peter caught by T. Barrington off the bowling of Mustaq for 1. Ghadge unbeaten on 18 (27 balls). Village 6/93 off 20.2 overs.
Bowling for Patong, I. Mustaq, 7.2 overs, 1 maiden, 3/27. R. Desmond, 3 overs 0/12. Tyson Barrington, 4 overs, 1/19, Mitchell Barrington, 3 overs 2/19, S Raju, 2 overs 0/10, N. Quail, 1 over, 0/4.
