One dead, four seriously injured in three vehicle smash north of Phuket

PHANG NGA: Two elderly German tourists are in critical condition having survived a three-vehicle smash in which one Thai man was killed and two more Thai cheauffers and another unidentified passenger were seriously injured last night just north of Phuket.

At about 6.30pm last night, Phang Nga police were notified of three-vehicle collision outside of Tai Muang district in which passengers in each vehicle were feared dead.

It took rescue workers more than an hour to free some of the passengers.

The two Germans, named as Han Josef, 52, and Matina Hattaner, 54 (spelling of names may be incorrect as transcribed from Thai report), and are being treated at Tai Muang Hospital in Phang Nga.

The deceased man, named as 30-year-old Mr Sophon Phetchat of Thung Maprao in Tai Muang, was reportedly responsible for the accident by speeding recklessly when he smashed into two other passenger vehicles at a sharp bend in the road.

Mr Sophon was driving a black Honda Civic with Phuket plates when he was said to smash into the other two vehicles – both White Toyota Altis makes – at a bend in Moo 5 of Ban Tha Sor village on the route between Tai Muang and Thung Maprao.

The scene of the accident in front of a 24-hour motel, drew quite the crowd of onlookers including police, villagers and even the Mayor of Tai Muang, Mr Jirawit Puangjit.

Rescue workers had to use special equipment to free the injured passengers stuck in the two Toyota vehicles with green commercial passenger plates, before transporting them all to hospital.

The family of the deceased man has been contacted to collect the body for funeral rites.
