The driver, whose name has yet to be released, was driving from Patong with two male passengers, her friends.

One man sitting in the front of the car was seriously injured and is unconscious. The male passenger sitting in the back was also injured but is conscious.

The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, a Toyota Vios with Chiang Mai license plates.

UPDATE: The driver of the car was identified as Kanlaya Tankaew, 30, a nurse. Her two male passengers were Rithachai Srichai, 26, and Thanakorn Tungkorphan, 28.

The spokeperson for Bangkok Hospital Phuket refused to give more information, but Maj Gen Choti Chavalvivat, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police said yesterday (August 15) that tests had shown that Ms Kanlaya had a blood alcohol level of 19 mg/dl -- far below the legal limit of 50.

This meant she was not drunk, he said - as had initially been suggested by officers at the scene - but she may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Gen Choti added, “Ms Kanlaya is still unconscious in the Intensive Care Unit at Bangkok Hospital.”
