Director-general Theerapong Rodprasert said 32,359 public vehicles were inspected and 6.3 per cent were caught speeding.

The department also inspected the condition of 85,484 public vehicles and found 231 of them were in "unprepared" condition, so 32 had to be replaced, while the rest needed minor repairs before their next journeys.

The department ordered the replacement of 176 drivers during the period after finding they were unfit for work.

According to the Interior Ministry, there are 2,247 inspection points nationwide with 66,315 officials working at those spots during the Songkran festival.

The officials stopped 768,867 vehicles and found 129,634 drivers had violated traffic laws, including 38,147 motorcyclists not wearing helmets and 35,376 without driving licences.
