Cases of extortion and harassment of foreign tourists by state authorities are to be investigated.

Police Lieutenant General Boonrueng Polpanich, who heads the NLA subcommittee on tourism, cited a recent foreign publication regarding Thai authorities mistreating foreign tourists, saying it significantly impacts the image of the Kingdom. He therefore invited related agencies, such as the Tourist Police Division, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Bangkok’s City Law Enforcement Department, to a meeting in order to inform them of the issues at hand.

After the meeting, Police Lieutenant General Boonrueng concluded that cases of mistreatment by the authorities, as were published in the foreign journal, may have taken place and therefore instructed related agencies to investigate such incidents. He also urged law enforcers to provide equal service and protection to both Thais and foreigners in order to maintain the country’s image.

The investigators responsible for the cases of abuse and harassment of foreigners are to report their findings to the NLA subcommittee on Thursday (January 29).
