Kids blamed for setting sparkler alight, starting Phuket Super Cheap store fire

PHUKET: Staff at a Super Cheap convenience store in Bang Tao, on Phuket’s west coast, have blamed children for setting alight a sparkler inside the store, resulting in the shop catching fire.

Lt Col Rassada Klengwong of the Cherng Talay Police was notified of the fire, in Soi Bang Tao 15, at 3:50pm yesterday (Oct 4).

There were no reports of injury from the incident, officials confirmed.

The store filled with smoke police were told.

Police arrived to find a crowd gathered in front of the store, which was still filled with smoke.

Two fire trucks from Cherng Talay Municipality soon arrived, and firefighters took 20 minutes to douse the blaze.

“One team of firefighters climbed on the roof and make an opening to let the smoke out, while the others sprayed water inside the store,” Col Rassada explained.

“Some merchandise and appliances were damaged by the fire. The cost of damage has yet to be determined,” he added.

Store staff told police that they noticed smoke, then a small fire, behind one shelf while shoppers were inside in store.

“They said the fire escalated rapidly and they tried to put it out, but it grew beyond their control, so they called for help,” Col Rassada explained.

“We were told that before the fire broke out, staff saw a couple of young children playing with merchandise in the store. They suspected the children lit a sparkler on one of the shelves before they ran out out store,” he added.

“We have contacted Forensic Police to investigate whether the fire was started by a ‘firecracker’ – or some other source. The investigation is ongoing at this time,” Col Rassada concluded.

Police are to question the store manager today (Oct 5) and check CCTV, Col Rassada told The Phuket News.

Swerv: As you can read from other comments, emergency (back) exits are often blocked. I know a few of these as well.
And have you ever seen the sign "emergency exit" above any door in these shops?

As you mentioned, it has been long time since you went there.
People forget quick.

And it is the professionality of the staff to look after kids alone entering the shop.
Are they buying something or just want to be naughty?
The staff saw the kids playing with merchandise. That is not normal to tolerate.

An 'accident'? Well it was a 'accident' what made 2 fire trucks racing to the store, and it took 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.
Not have a safety protocol in your stores? Try a 'accident', as swerv call it.

I wonder if the emergency exits were blocked like the one near the bus station. Last time i went, huge fridges blocked the emergency exits at the back of the store!

Kurt: Why does it read funny? It's a fire, an accident.
Plus these stores as with most shops, have a rear entrance so it's not limited to one door for in/out as you stated.I also think this store has 2 entrance doors, although been a long time since i went to it.

You've never seen kids walk in a shop unattended?

It reads a bit funny.
Are kids allowed to room around in a large Super Cheap Store without adult guidance and do such things? Hard to believe.
Is that Super Cheap Store not having a alarm/sprinkler system?
Hope the Phuket fire brigade prevention department checks out or everything in that store is according fire prevention regulations.
If not, close down the store until all certifying is done correct, according the law.
It can safe lives for next time.
Specially as such stores have usually just 1 door for in/out.

Wouldn't think of putting dangerous substances in locked cases which have to be accessed by staff! Lets see if things change!!
