The OrBorTor sent letters to 11 different hotels in Kamala, asking them to allocate space for taxis but only two agreed – the Thavorn Beach Hotel and the Swissotel.

Kamala has 18 different taxi groups comprising 169 vehicles – minibuses, tuk-tuks, SUVs, cars and motorbikes.

Of these, 67 have green plates and 14 have yellow plates. The remaining half – 84 vehicles – are unlicensed “black-plate” vehicles.

“So far, no one is breaking the rules in our area [by setting up taxi stands on public land],” OrBorTor clerk (palad) Chinnadit Tantipanwadee told The Phuket News. “We are going to set up the Taxi Call Centre very soon.

“We are not sure when it will be ready, but the plan has been approved,” he said. “This will not be for meter taxis. The people attached to the call centre will be able to drive only to and from Kamala area, and will have to join a queue for passengers.

“Those who prefer to switch to driving meter taxis can pick up anyone anywhere on the island.”
