Military, police and bomb squad units are ready to rapidly respond to any incidents that might happen, while a beefed up number of security officials – both plain-clothes and uniformed – will also continue to be on heightened alert and procedure, Governor Nisit Jansomwong told reporters this morning.
Gov Nisit’s comments come in the wake of a car bomb in Phuket’s parallel party paradise isle of Ko Samui, days ago. Story here.
In addition to beefing up inspections during the Songkran celebrations (see related story here) the governor reiterated that ‘safety and security’ will also be essential for the thousands of bikers and their guests who will be visiting the island in the coming days weeks, adding that the international safety will continue to be priority during the upcoming LBGT “Pride Week” and Jazz Festival at the end of the month.
According to reports from the Tah Chad Chai checkpoint, security measures, involving a collaborative effort among Thai and foreign personnel, have included the photographic profiling of guests who have been arriving to the island via road ahead of Phuket Bike Week.
