FIFA all the way
It’s FIFA, and then everything else.
Other than it’s worldwide appeal, the FIFA videogame series stands as the top game that causes your friends to cry, especially after a good trash-talking session.
There are tons of players and teams that everyone in the world can identify, so strengths and weaknesses are easy to gauge. In contrast, there are maybe two names in the NHL that can (arguably) come close to having the same name recognition, and they’re both retired – Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. OK, Martin Brodeur, too (go Devils!).
I agree, Chad, hockey is a great sport. But nothing can top the feeling of staging a comeback while you are down two goals against Real Madrid – something like this would be talked about for weeks.
Football is a very straightforward sport, but somehow EA Sports has managed to narrow down the excitement of the beautiful game to a 10-20 minute experience that fits in all time schedules. Holding a stick? I’d rather see Lionel Messi make your entire team look like six-year-olds on his way to scoring between your goalkeeper’s legs. Over the years, FIFA has perfected it’s AI (artificial intelligence) to the point that the computer might as well talk trash.
The pace is quick, but there’s a lot of room for strategy and patience which is a nice option to have. FIFA also requires some understanding of formations and tactics which can even translate to real life pick-up football matches with your friends.
FIFA 15 is available for the PC, PS3, PS4, PS VITA, 3DS, Wii, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

NHL is better
There is only one correct answer to “What is the best sports game to play against your friends”.
And that answer is NHL. With the speed of football, the violence of the NFL, and the most unique surface in sports, hockey itself is already great. Now, add friends and a controller, and enjoy the ride.
Hockey is a fantastic sport. It’s three 20-minute periods of frenzy, where your nails would be bitten off if your hands weren’t securely glued to the controller. There are no timeouts, and barely any breaks to the actual game, so the high-pace stays up throughout the session. Hitting and fighting are allowed, so not only can you win the game, you can physically beat up your opponent/friend as well.
Commit a penalty? Congratulations, you are now down a player for two to four minutes. Two minutes have never felt so long until you are stuck on defense, waiting for your player to get out of the penalty box, while your opponent is rifling off shots.
Scoring, like soccer, is hard to come by and 1-0 is a very probable outcome. So, when you score, whether on a slap shot from the blue line or faking out the goalie off a breakaway, all that anxiety is released in one glorious moment of ecstasy. You will stand up, dance around, and talk smack to your friend. Now wait until the moment you are in sudden death overtime, next goal wins it, and you score. Pure bliss.
FIFA is great, but I’ll take the faster pace, physicality of NHL, and being right over JP any day.
NHL 15 is available for the PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
