Alexander Travkin, 31, from Russia and his partner Julia Mironova, 29, from the Ukraine filed a report with the Krabi Marine Police at noon today where it was stated that their 12 metre yacht Adventure had sunk at Ao Nang.

Mr Travkin told police that he and Ms Mironova, both freelance photographers, had travelled on their yacht from Malaysia and were heading to Phuket.

“The wind was strong and the waves were big so we moored the yacht at Ao Nang and stayed in town. When we returned in the morning, we discovered the yacht had sunk. The mast was still visible and all our belongings were floating in the water,” he said.

Marine Police, led by Lt Siroj Chumsri, went to the area following the report and helped the couple retrieve their belongings.

“They reported the incident to us because they had many valuable items that had been damaged. They said that the damage would come to about one million baht,” Lt Siroj said.

demonboy...nowhere in the "Constitution of Ukraine" does it specifically state that the country is to be called "Ukraine." It may use the word, but does not specifically state that is what the country is to be known as.

We are talking here about the English language more specifically the use of definitive article "the" which has no equivalent in Russian or Ukraine languages.

Normally definite articles are not used with names eg "Russia" or "Iran is in Asia", but is used with plural nouns eg the Phillipines etc. These are not exhaustive uses for the use of the article. In the case of Ukraine, the idea behind the grammar here is that there is only one Ukraine. It's just like saying the United States, or the Bahamas or the Himalayas.

So grammatically in English the correct term is "the Ukraine," therefore the journalism is spot on. But hey if you want say Ukraine...knock yourself out.

The Ukrainian Declaration of Independence and Constitution specially states that the country is called 'Ukraine', not 'The Ukraine'. After independence in 1991 the leaders asked the world to stop calling it 'The Ukraine'.

'The' normally refers to a group of islands or a region. Ukraine is neither, it is a state.

Look it up (from a reliable source). This is slack journalism.

You're wrong.
Both are acceptable.

It's 'Ukraine', not 'the Ukraine'.
