Chief of the Phuket Lifeguard Service, Prathaiyut Chuayuan, confirmed to The Phuket News that the five beaches have been closed due to weather conditions and rough surf.
“We posted a notice on our Facebook page advising of the closure and will monitor the situation. Hopefully by tomorrow we may be able to open them back up for beachgoers, but we will announce on our Facebook page if we do.
“The five beaches – Mai Khao, Naithorn, Surin, Laem Sing, and Karon – are closed today because of rough waves and strong winds which pose a potential threat to people. The waves at these beaches are currently up to three metres high,” he said.
“The entire beaches are blocked off with red flags with ropes blocking certain areas. Although the beaches are closed, we still have beach guards stationed there to keep people out of the water.
“People can still go to other beaches such as Patong, but they should keep in mind that they should not swim in red flag zones.
“Please listen to beach guards, we want all to be safe while visiting our beaches,” he added.
