After the alarm was raised two fire trucks and crews from the Phuket City Municipality arrived at about 2:30pm and took 20 minutes to bring the fire – which at one time threatened nearby buildings – under control.
Investigators said the fire started inside the building, which is near the Slaughterhouse Intersection, and was fueled by Styrofoam food containers and bits of woods in what used to be a market but recently had been used only for storage.
No one was hurt in the fire. Investigators are trying to establish the cause.
