Danish national Peter Efferso, 46, was taken into custody after security staff found four bundles of heroin wrapped around his waist during a routine pre-flight security check at 6:30am.
He was later handed over to Customs officers then to the Tha Chatchai Police.
Mr Efferso was presented to the press at the airport this morning.
“Mr Efferso admitted that he wrapped the heroin around his waist with supporting belt in order to take it to his home country,” Tha Chatchai police special investigator Pol Lt Col Watcharin Jiratthikanwiwat said.
After the press conference, Mr Efferso was taken to Tha Chatchai police to be charged.
Although Thailand carries the death penalty for drug suspects found guilty of of involvement in such a large volume of narcotics, such sentences are often commuted to long jail terms in cases where the suspect confesses to the charge.
