The crash occurred near Koh Phi Phi Lae, off Pilae Bay, about 5km from Phi Phi pier, around 6pm, said Pol Lt Col Jetsada Chanpum, chief of Koh Phi Phi Police Station.

The speedboat Bantita 9, carrying about 40 Chinese tourists, had just left Phi Phi Lae en route to Phuket when it was rear-ended by another speedboat, the Leelu 3, carrying tourists to Maya Bay, the Bantita 9 skipper, Suwit Saithong, 25, told police.

He said five passengers on the Bantita 9 were injured, all Chinese. One of them was seriously hurt, but no one fell into the sea. The rear of the boat was damaged.

Police were investigating who was at fault. The two drivers pointed accusing fingers at each other.
