Lt Col Weerapong Rakkhito of the Patong Police told The Phuket News was notified at 4:22pm that lifeguards were rescuing a tourist who had succumbed to strong waves about 300 metres south of Bangla Rd.

The man, later identified as 31-year-old Chinese national Gang Liv, was found unconscious in the water after he was swept away by strong wave, Col Weerapong said.

“Mr Gang was taken to Patong Hospital by Kusoldharm rescue workers and medical staff from Patong Hospital,” Col Weerapong explained.

“Hospital staff confirmed that Mr Gang died at 4:45pm,” he added.

“We examined the body and found no signs of assault or injury. Doctors concluded that the cause of death was drowning,” Col Weerapong noted.

“The Chinese Embassy has been notified. Mr Gang’s wife did not want any further investigation,” he added.
