Lai Xiaochang, 22, was rushed to Krabi Hospital after friends found her unconscious in the water while snorkelling at the popular tourist day-trip destination Koh Gai (Chicken Island), near Poda Island. She was with a tour group from Nang-ann tour. (See story here.)

Seemingly saved from drowning, Ms Lai was alive and seemed to be partially aware but remained unresponsive in the intensive-care unit (ICU). Doctors believed she had suffered at least partial brain damage. (See story here.)

“The hospital notified us yesterday (Oct 10) that the victim had died in the ICU at 6pm,” Lt Col Attapong Sankraiwuth of the Krabi Tourist Police told The Phuket News today (Oct 11).

“She was surrounded by her family and friends,” he added.

Col Attapong said that he did not know what caused Ms Lai to finally succumb to her condition.

“Actually today (Oct 11) the tour company and the victim’s family were supposed to meet to discuss insurance coverage, but we are still waiting for doctors to issue death certificate marking the cause of death,” he concluded.
