Police were notified of the incident at 2pmm, but by the time police arrived with Ruamjai rescue workers, the man, identified as Su Fuhai from Beijing, was unresponsive on the beach.

“Witnesses told police that they saw the man swimming near the rocks, then a huge wave hit him and he disappeared into the water,” said Maj Patiwat Yodkwan of the Karon Police.

Lifeguards recovered Mr Su, unconscious from the near the rocks, and brought him to shore.

Attempts were made to revive him, but he remained not responsive, Maj Patiwat noted in his report.

“Mr Su was in Phuket with his family and we will notify the embassy,” Maj Patiwat said.

The photo speaks book pages.
Upset Chinese family members, and a superior attitude looking thai police officer ( with his cap on indoors) who knows that these Chinese are just gone in a few days.

Hi Simon1, I guess we have to understand a bit more about the chinese tourist and the Phuket beaches.
Many chinese tourists never seen the sea before, perhaps also this 70 year old Chinese tourist.
They have no knowledge of sea conditions and the power of the water.
This is all well known by thai officials. What they do about it? Nothing.

I suggest that Chinese tour guides get Phuket beach training and a working permit, remain on Phuket and guide the Chinese tourists in doing what Thai tour guides not do,.. saving Chinese lives.
Thai proved to fail in this.
Thai not care about tourists. Just want their money.
They have no clue/ can not imagine about Chinese people have never seen the ocean before.

In a way you can not blame these thai guides, their education it at the bottom of the asean scale. Just air between the ears.
But tourists die.
By snorkeling in 60 cm deep water, thrown at rocks, and speed boat propellers.

When will these idiots take notice of the flags, lifeguards and conditions. Sad as it is all they are doing is suicide.. They look for places where its not safe and then jump in. This gives the island a bad name but its not the lifeguards fault. These people should be banned from the beach or snorkel tours unless they have been certified "safe" by the local dive centers first. Most are too weak when it comes to swimming in a pool let alone the sea in low season. This is sad but at the end of the day its just suicide.

With many incidents like this, we hear of lifeguards recovering the person from the beach or the rocks. Perhaps if the lifeguards weren't sitting around chatting with their friends, playing with their phones, or napping, maybe things like this could be prevented. I was just at Karon yesterday, and if it wasn't for people on the beach and some surfers in the water yelling for the lifeguards, the swimmer might have been carried away and drown. Also, by the lifeguard got to the swimmer with his paddleboard, but could hardly manage it in the waves, which were very small in the afternoon. Just another case of Thailand putting tourist safety way down on the list of priorities. Most of these so called "lifeguards" could hardly save themselves in serious conditions.
