The pursuit car finally cornered Thaweepong Kerk-pon, 28, from Phuket, at the intersection of Sakdidet Rd and Chao Fa East Rd.

Pol Sgt Maj Nopphadon Boonyapijit ran across to demand Thaweepong get out of his car quietly. He responded by stamping on the accelerator and rammed the sergeant into a traffic light pole.

Another officer, seeing this, opened fire, hitting Thaweepong in the right leg. With the car no longer usable, Thaweepong tried to make a run for it, but the bullet wound in his leg slowed him down and he was caught.

In the damaged car police found 300 methamphetamine tablets and 50 grams of crystal meth.

Both Thaweepong and Sgt Maj Nopphadon were taken to hospital where they are recovering, Thaweepong under 24-hour police guard.
