Cambodia to offer three-year visas from next month

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian government will soon allow foreigners to stay for up to three years on a single visa, in a bid to meet a goal of seven million overseas travellers annually by 2020, reports the Khmer Times.

The three-year multiple-entry visa, a new government strategy to encourage foreigners to come to the Kingdom, will allow foreigners to stay in the country for up to three years, Minister of Tourism Thong Khon said on Wednesday (Aug 17), the report said. (See story here.)

“The multiple-entry visa application will be available from September 1 to foreigners from all countries,” Mr Khon said, noting that the visas would be available at different prices according to the length of stay, although pricing details of the new visas were unavailable.

“The new entry visa will allow tourists and businesspeople to enter and exit Cambodia many times during the visa’s validity period,” Mr Khon said.

“They can apply for a visa in Cambodia and can travel in and out many times according to the visa they apply for. Tourists and investors can apply for a two-year stay or three-year stay with multiple entries.”

Cambodia hopes to welcome at least 7.5 million foreign tourists by 2020, according to a recently announced goal. Of the targeted number, two million are Chinese and 300,000 Japanese, according to Cambodia Tourism Marketing Strategy 2016-2020.

Ho Vandy, secretary-general of Cambodia’s National Tourism Alliance, said the move to extend visas was part of a strategy to develop the country’s tourism sector.

“It is a strategy to make the target [of seven million tourists] come true after the private sector and government work together,” Mr Vandy said.

“It would really help to encourage both tourists and investors, and foreigners who provide training and work in social development to come to Cambodia,” he added.

For Cambodia’s tourism visa, people from Asean countries are currently granted a stay of 14 days to a month and tourists from other regions – the European Union and the US for example – are allowed one month. Businesspeople can currently renew their visa for a month, three months, six months or up to a year, the Khmer Times noted.

Kurt...like I said, the immigration laws are just about standard in every country you wish to name. Nothing to do with culture, but what countries wish to do. This is the way of the 21st Century. And as I said, if you don't like it, make representations using your infinite knowledge of world immigration to the United Nations, so that all nations can take notice of what you say and change.

Kurt... You say "we all know...is a silly thing" I don't know that. It's the law of the land, whether I like it or not. You try overstaying your visa without having to leave, return and renew in any country and see how far you get. The laws are just about standard in any country.

So, when you disrespect the Thai nation in saying "Logic is something hard to find in Thailand in many cases" the corollary of that statement is that that all nations of the world are lacking in logic. This demonstrates a complete lack of understanding and knowledge on your part.

Thai Joe12: Give us a break, and look to immigration laws in your surrounding asian countries.
Stop talking insular and xenophobic, enter the 21st century.
With your reaction you make a fool of yourself to all of us here.
Are you blind, not red the Cambodia visa initiative?

Oh, and feel free to study a bit more about AEC.
Start learning thinking a bit cross-cultural.

Oh, and do some brushing up. Here we all know what thainess means.
Don't block yourself, as being a thai yourself.

@ Thor: We all know that the thai visa run business is a silly thing.
There is no logic in it.
But 'logic' is something hard to find in Thailand in many cases.

Instead make it a 3 month report to local immigration office.
Specially for people with a medical indication, is that so difficult?
I wish you success with your Cambodia visa application + many good years to live there.

Kurt...no it's not Thainess (whatever that means) it's actually the law of Thailand and is also the law of most countries. What it does generally is that it gives non-citizens clearance/permission to enter a country and to remain there within specified constraints, such as a time frame -limit on the time spent in the country - prohibition against employment and can be revoked at any time but are dispensed with, such as reciprocal treaty arrangements. You need to make yourself familiar as the reasons for the issuance of Visa's. If you think they are silly, by all means make representations to the United Nations so that all countries can dispense with them.

Samhayman, the answer is thainess. Nothing more, nothing less.
If thai government trust foreign people more, than that 90 day report would have been terminated. ( Singapore hasn't)
But thai not give/take trust, not among each other, we see that daily, and so for sure not when it comes to foreigners.

It is ok for me to report every 90 days, but it is a silly happening as they know our address and phone number.
Is there any other country in SE Asia with that silly rule?

It is AEC now!
So Thailand, become strong and line up with other AEC members in immigration matters among each other..
Quite easy, Yes?

Why can't Thailand offer this as well? It's a giant "pain in the arse" having to renew yearly visas at Phuket town. I would be more than happy to pay more than 3 years fees to get a 3 year visa and only have to deal with a highly inefficient system once every 3 years.

It's the worst experience having to go back and forth to Phuket town to submit the same requirements every year.

Good to see Cambodia is showing more respect to tourists than Thailand.
