Capt Patcharee Wongboon of the Wichit Police was notified of the accident, at the intersection in front of the entrance to the Baan Maneekram housing estate, at 8:30pm.

Police arrived with rescue workers from Wichit Municipality and Ruamjai Kupai rescue foundation to find an Isuzu pickup stopped askew in the middle of the entrance road to Baan Maneekram.

The driver, Niphon Kanprakob, 39, was standing by with his wife and daughter.

In the middle of the road was a wrecked Honda motorbike and nearby was the body of its driver, identified by police as a British national Michael Fraser MacPherson, 44, from Gloucester.

Mr MacPherson was unconscious and fully unresponsive at the scene, and later confirmed dead on arrival at Vachira Phuket Hospital.

No helmet was found at the scene of the crash.

Mr Niphon told police that he was turning right into Moo Baan Maneekram when the motorcycle approaching from the oncoming lane skidded out of control and crashed into the pickup truck.

Mr Niphon was taken to Wichit Police Station for more questioning.

Police have yet to confirm whether Mr Niphon was subjected to any alcohol test, and have also yet to reveal whether or not Mr Niphon will face any charges for the accident.

Police told The Phuket News said that they had notified the British Embassy of the accident.

swerve: There are rules of ( even thai) the roads.
Reading the story, seeing the photos, + a bit of your imagination and deduction.

Straight going on travelers have first way.
Opposite direction travelers deviating to the right(!) must give opposite straight traffic first way.
That is the thai law.
No room at all for speculation, not even as the victim who had first right of the way was a foreigner.
Do not 'massage' the unfortunate happening.

Kurt: As Stegee suggested, unless you were there, best not to speculate.

Good post Stegee...but, with all these armchair critics, "unless you were there yourself, probably best not to speculate" is asking way too much.

My condolences to family who would be seeking answers as to the cause of the tragic death of their loved one. I would suggest if they read this, to try and ignore the comments of the ignorant few.

Turning right?
Not giving first way to traffic at opposite lane which drive straight on?
That is a traffic offence.
As the result is a dead person, it is now a criminal offence.
Does mr Niphon have a driving license?
Knowing the rules of the road in Thailand?

R.I.P. mr Mac Pherson. To bad the way he passed away due to someone who not obey traffic rules.
Waiting for alcohol- and drug tests of the thai car driver + yes/no having a driving license.

@PREVIOUS POSTERS... there is also the possibility that the motorbike was travelling too fast and this was the cause of the accident.. hard to say.. unless you were there yourself, probably best not to speculate..

"Mr Niphon told police that he was turning right into Moo Baan Maneekram when the motorcycle approaching from the oncoming lane skidded out of control and crashed into the pickup truck."
Well I suppose he was braking like freak in order to try to avoid hitting the idiot who had turned across his path.

So basically the guy was turning across oncoming traffic when it wasn't safe to do so and the motorbike didn't have space to stop in time........

Seems like a lot of verbiage when all you needed to say was "Khun Niphon, like all other impatient "me me go first" Thai drivers couldn't stop and wait, so he pulled in front of the motorbike which caused the man to die".
