Phuket: US soccer wants to play Thailand but nobody’s home

FOOTBALL: The United States soccer team inquired about playing Thailand in a friendly match next summer, but no one from the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) deemed the matter important enough to tell Thailand’s manager Winfried Schafer.

“I don’t know anything about this,” Schafer said.

Schafer did ask the FAT to arrange eight friendlies in the buildup to the 2015 Asian Cup to help the Thai national team gain some much needed practice and experience after they failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Thailand is hopeful of scheduling the friendly on an official FIFA sanctioned date in the summer of 2013 after the U.S. Consulate in Thailand sent an invitation letter to play the game to celebrate 180 years of international relations between the two countries, Goal.com reported, but the US team have other commitments; playing Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier and hosting the Gold Cup throughout July.

Winfried Schafer does not hold out much hope for the game to go ahead:

“In my opinion, Jurgen Klinsmann and his squad should want to play with a team that in similar level with them, because this will affect FIFA ranking,” he said.
