Chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld confirmed the newly revised fleet size, an upgrade from the previous goal of 53 by 2016.
The additional jets will continue to be single-aisle twin-engine Airbus 320s, but the newer ones will be the A320neo, equipped with energy-saving wing tips known as sharklets and “new engine options”.
Mr Tassapon said the larger all-A320 fleet will support the mission of Thailand’s largest low-cost carrier to dominate the Thai skies while increasing coverage of Indochina and Myanmar.
TAA recently took delivery of its 29th A320 and five more A320s are lined up to join the fleet this year to bring the total to 34.
TAA’s new aircraft will be drawn from the pool of the AirAsia Group, which has ordered 475 A320s from European planemaker Airbus for delivery between now and 2021, said TAA executives.
AirAsia Group airlines now operate 118 A320s, and another 30 will be delivered to various subsidiaries this year.
TAA on Wednesday announced first-quarter passenger volume was up by 20 per cent to 2.56 million.
That figure was in line with the 20 per cent rise in the airline’s capacity, which increased to 2.96 million in the same period.
TAA maintained a load factor of 87 per cent in the first quarter, unchanged from the same period last year.
The airline credited the rise in passenger numbers to its increase in frequencies to domestic destinations such as Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
TAA is targeting 10 million passengers for the full year, up from 8.3 million last year and 6.9 million the year before.
