Capt Wiphawan Wattananeangthanong from Phuket City Police confirmed that the 16-year-old male was a second-year student at Phuket Technology College and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

On arriving at the scene this morning, Capt Wiphawan, rescue workers and emergency service staff from Vachira Phuket Hospital found the Songkhla-registered truck parked at the side of the road.

At the rear of the truck was a black-and-white Fino motorcycle and the body of the driver in school uniform lying face down. Police confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck, Somsong Sutthipruthaithip, was nearby and surrendered himself to the police.

“After initial questioning, Mr Somsong confirmed he was driving towards Thepkrasattri Rd and was aware of the motorcyclist,” said Capt Wiphawan.

“Mr Somsong stated that the motorcycle suddenly lost its balance on the footpath beside the road and collided with the truck which then ran him over,” she added.

Capt Wiphawan confirmed that police took Mr Somsong to Phuket City Police station for further questioning and investigation before any charges can be made.

k...did you read what squashed him? A suit of armour wouldn't have saved him.

Poor scholar. If he did wear a helmet, even a 'thai hardly protecting one', if he not drove at footpath and lost balance, he would still be a life. Some days it needs thinking what to do right and what not to do to jeopardise your life. Did he had a driving license? Condolences to family.

Capricornball | 27 October 2020 - 18:57:20

Jeez...No helmet...parents at least partially responsible...but not that it would have matter after getting run over by a cement truck, which we all know are some of the most deadly vehicles on the roads here. Truck likely gave no extra room for the kid on the motorbike, just barreling along as usual. Company will just pay off the family, driver likely back on the job this afternoon. NEXT!
