One man and a woman died in the accident that saw more than 50 people, mostly Chinese and Korean tourists, rushed to hospital in Phuket after the speedboats Chonlakij and Hongfa 33 collided between Koh Dokmai and Phi Phi Island at about midday. (See story here.)

Vachira Phuket Hospital, the main government hospital on the island, located in Phuket Town, late today issued a list of 21 names of patients received at that facility after the crash.

Among them was Yan Yang, 26, the woman who died from injuries sustained in the collision. Listed as serious was Liu Jie, 29, who suffered a serious head injury. Jin Haixian, 4 years old, also suffered a head injury, but the child’s condition was not reported.

Nine have been discharged from hospital care, while 11 were still receiving treatment, said the hospital.

DDPM did not report the whereabouts or condition of any other tourists or crewmen involved in the collision, though the Phuket Provincial Hospital in Rassada this afternoon reported one man dead on arrival at that facility.

The Bangkok Post reported the deceased man as Liang Grianfu, but did not clarify which hospital he was at. (See story here.)

Gov Chamroen earlier today, when reporting that 26 people from the two boats were taken to Mission Hospital with minor injuries only, said that both bodies had been taken to the main morgue at Vachira Hospital. (See story here.)

Phuket Marine Police Deputy Superintendent Lt Col Prasert Srikunarat told The Phuket News, “We are still investigating the cause of the collision. It was fortunate that all tourists on both boats were wearing life jackets. If they weren’t, the number of casualties could have been much worse.

“Meanwhile, we waiting for doctors to confirm cause of death of both people who died. At this stage we are not sure if the force of the impact caused their death or if they were thrown from the boat, or died from another combination of circumstances,” he added.

Where the drivers of both boats tested for alcohol and drugs because many boat drivers drink and smoke dope everyday.

Very sad event, and an even sadder state of affairs in the Thai tourism industry, particularly the marine safety sector. The carnage just keeps happening, and no measures are ever taken to address it. It seem like Thai government needs to remove these dead beat officials, and hire foreign safety consultants to come here and do something meaningful. This just cannot keep happening.
