Minister of Tourism and Sports Pipat Ratchakijprakarn said on Friday (July 3) the ministry will not splash out money launching a tourist campaign across China. It will target provinces that have the coronavirus under control. He would not say which provinces.

Phuket was being eyed to lead the planned tourism bubble comprising Thailand and its selected partners. The primary target was China, he said.

“China is the first market with potential, because flying time to Thailand is less than six hours,” Mr Pipat said.

Other markets were South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other southeast Asian countries.

One in every four foreign visitors to Thailand before the pandemic was Chinese, he said.

There were almost 40 million foreign arrivals last year, but the Bank of Thailand expects only 8 million this year after COVID-19 grounded airlines and stopped tourism in its tracks.

quality tourist from Europe will not be coming if the Chinese are in Phuket, who wants to risk being infected by them, but then there is nothing in Phuket to attract hih end tourists

I miss Thai Government stand how China publicly , till now handle their Hunan- and Swine virus outbreak to the world. I miss political stand about enormous concentration camps in west China, and the thousands of women who are forced to abortion/sterilisation. The being China's satellite's behaviour of Thailand is not future promising. These matter should be on the agenda of ASEAN.

China has lied non-stop since the start of this pandemic, the most glaring example is their denial of the staggering levels of CV-19 that exist today in China. But those that prefer to believe the lies put all of us at risk and the opening of the borders between Thailand and China will simply result in a huge 2nd wave and everyone being thrown back into full lockdowns and further poverty. Sad.

Beat a dead horse to those with deaf ears. CHINESE WUHAN VIRUS! China lied to the world about timeframe and origin of virus. Second wave of virus across China now. China still lies about infection numbers witnessed by thousand under lockdown including Beijing, though they deny infections. All ignored for No Baht Tours! Safety of Thai people means nothing.

Not long ago the Ouija Board policy-makers were banging on about quality tourists. Now, it's back to luring the Chinese again. This is truly unfortunate. Future quality tourism just fell from the back burner to the floor.
