Police reported that the bodies of holidaymakers Hanne Peter Shaniater, 70, and his wife Maria Teresa, 69, were found on the beach in tambon Bo Phut.
Initial inquiries revealed they had checked into the hotel on Monday and later went for a swim. There were high seas and a strong wind at the time. The waves were about two metres high, police said.
The wife suddenly disappeared under the waves. Her husband rushed to help her but they were both pulled under the water. Hotel staff tried unsuccessfully to rescue them. Their bodies were later found washed up on the beach.
