Stacks of cash, suicide note with instructions found next to body of American, 26, in Phuket hotel

PHUKET: Police have little reason to suspect foul play in an apparent suicide of a 26-year-old American found in a Patong hotel room yesterday (March 5) alongside three stacks of cash including 615 Euros and about B32,800, with an apparent suicide note containing instructions of what to do with the money.

death, suicide, homicide,

Darawan Naknakhon

Sunday 6 March 2016, 07:33AM

The victim, identified by a passport found in the room, was named as Mr Nathan House, 26, of the US.

An apparent suicide note found in the room contained clear instructions for how to use the cash, one of the biggest portions asked to be given to "police and/or hospital to cover the cost of their investigation (if any)".

Though it seems like a clear cut case of suicide, The Phuket News highlights two oddities that should be noted in the investigation, if any, as follows:

C and C Marine

The note was signed by the same name listed in the passport but oddly the date was signed of 4/3/16 (March 4, 2016), which is not the typical way most Americans are trained to sign letters, who typically sign the number of the month before the day, i.e. 3/4/16.

The second oddity is that he left 615 Euros (about B24, 000) for the purpose of cremating his body (see image), and it is not immediately clear of why an American would be carrying that much Euros in Thailand.

Nonetheless, authorities are in the process of confirming the cause of death and notifying the embassy.

@Editor
My apologies. My comment wasn't about any detail in your article, it was about the irrelevancy of the very 1st comment made by Tim Myrtue.

@Sateeb.

This is a breaking news article, not an investigative news feature, and the objective of this story is to state the facts of the news event (a body was found) in a timely fashion. The Phuket News' editor on duty handling this story highlighted two oddities or questions for investigators (the police) to pursue in their own investigation. An American carrying 615 Euros in Patong is an oddity because it is not common, and we are confident that you will not be able to find many, if any, Americans in Patong right now who possess hundreds of Euros. While the fact is explainable, as you point out by studying two years of blog content, it is up to an investigator dedicated to this case to determine and answer questions raised by the available facts.

@Ned and @Belzybob

The date in the letter was signed multiple times "4/3/16", and the body was found on March 5, 2016, so we can reason that it was signed on March 4, 2016. Again, only highlighting an "oddity" in the facts, not drawing conclusions, which is the purpose of the actual investigation (if any).

Not a mystery at all. If you had taken the time to visit the we site and read the whole story you would know that the guy had recently been in Europe. Why is carrying different currency an oddity? Writing articles without proper research is more odd to me. RIP Nathan...

Very sad. Please rest in peace Mr. Nathan House.

@Tim Myrtue
In Canada dates are written mm/dd/yy.
If he was a computer geek, he would have likely used the format yyyy/mm/dd
So you're wrong on both counts..

Kurt - read the article. It says "the Phuket News highlights two oddities". It's a comment by Phuket News, not Police as you state.

Stevepkt, Well, there are different situations of going to die on Phuket.

1: The alderly, the retired foreign people living on Phuket. It is news, however they probably died also in their country of origin if they were there, at their age, at their time..

2: Phuket foreign holiday people, drastic change of environment, arrived stressed, hardly sleep. Drinking a lot, perhaps soft drugs? Have already a unknown disease popping up, and the body gives up.

3: Foreigners, having a long distance relationship with a thai girl ( internet), sending her already monthly money long time, having high expectations.
After arrival finding out he is not the only 'contributer'.
Whole life expectation of the tourist falling apart at once, than a good night drunk, no one to take care you,and there you go. ( from balcony, or just walk on the road in front of a car, or overdosis).

Plus many more drama initiatives, we can't blame Thailand.

You are totally wrong in your comment about how Americans write dates. They write dates exactly as the letter shows - month, day and year. It is the British that put the day first.

Carrying Usa/Sin dollars or Euro's by foreigners visiting Thailand is not unusual.
Sure it is not a oddity, international seen.
International travelers use it as back up, in case they lost a credit/bank card, quite normal.
Strange that the phuket police not understand/familiar with it.

It's a terrible shame , and also quite a pity that a place as beautiful as Phuket is also a place that so many foreigners take their lives and commit suicide. Can anyone tell me why Phuket is the host of so many tragedies such as this ?
