The 51-year-old Duchess said she was in constant contact with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, on the day of the wedding, but chose to go abroad to help ease the pain of not being invited to the royal wedding.
“I chose to go and be in Thailand in a place called Camelia … the jungle embraced me,” told chat show hostess Oprah Winfrey during the latter’s show earlier this week.
The Camelia Resort is in Kanchanaburi, next to the Kwae Yai river and just downstream from the famed “Bridge on the River Kwai”. Rooms at the resort cost between B800 and B1,200 a night.
The Duchess told Ms Winfrey the snub was “so difficult … because I wanted to be there with my girls … to be getting them dressed and to go as a family.
“Also, it was so hard, because the last bride up that aisle was me.”
Prince Andrew and the estranged couple’s two daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, attended the wedding.
The Duchess and Prince Andrew were married at Westminster Abbey in 1986. They announced their separation in 1992 and divorced in 1996.
