Security warning to US citizens

The US Embassy in Bangkok is bracing for a protest planned at its gates tomorrow (September 18) over an anti-Islamic film that was at the root of the recent riots in Benghazi, Libya, in which the US Ambassador to that country and three other embassy staffers were killed.

It has also updated its security warnings to US citizens in Thailand, warning them “to exercise caution and to be aware of their surroundings, particularly around large crowds or gatherings.

“Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence with little or no warning,” the advisory said.

“You should avoid areas that may be targeted for demonstrations and exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations or large gatherings. You should monitor local media to keep updated with the latest information about demonstrations and areas to avoid.”

The Royal Thai Police have affirmed that all related agencies are stepping up security measures in the face of “growing risks”.

Thai government news agency NNT reported: “Security personnel and Metropolitan police have been closely monitoring the situation for any signs of possible attacks. However, the police added that they are not aware of any specific threat to US citizens in Thailand at the moment.”

In tomorrow’s demonstration several hundred people are expected to assemble in Lumpini Park and march on the embassy, beginning around 1 pm. Traffic will most likely be disrupted.

The Embassy will be closed to the public from midday and non-essential personnel will be sent home. Visa and citizen services appointments scheduled for tomorrow afternoon are being postponed to later dates.

The film that sparked the deadly violence in Benghazi and the planned protest in Bangkok, Innocence of Islam, was written and directed by Sam Bacile, and purports to be a biography of the Prophet Muhammed.

Described by the Hollwood Reporter as “amateur” the film repeats many of the negative stereotypes about the Prophet and Islam. Distribution of parts of the film on the Internet has caused an international outcry.

For more information on security, US citizens are advised to call the Embassy at 02- 205-4000 or visit the US Citizens Service website at http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/. The most up-to-date information will be posted on the site.
