Rohingya shooting policeman’s trial underway in Phang Nga

PHUKET: The immigration police officer who fatally shot a Rohingya man on the run after escaping the Immigration Centre in Phang Nga on May 23 is currently having his case heard in court police in Phang Nga police have have confirmed.

Col Chote Chitchai, Deputy Chief of the Phang Nga Provincial Police, confirmed to The Phuket News yesterday (Nov 3) that the case against Snr Sgt Maj Thanakon Noosawas is currently being heard at Phang Nga Provincial Court, but that no verdict has yet been reached.

Sgt Thanakorn shot dead 18-year-old Rohingya escapee Mohammad Khawnee while in pursuit of the fugitive on May 23.

Mr Mohammad was one of 21 Rohingya migrants who escaped the Phang Nga Immigration Detention Centre at about 3am that day. (See story here.)
