RHYTHM NATION: Beat heat with drum circle

Phuket island is one of the few places that formally holds celebrations for three different new year traditions: Western, Chinese, and Songkran, the Thai new year. Songkran will start on April 13 with festivities to take place for several days throughout Thailand.

A Facilitated Drum circle itself facilitates community building, fun and self-renewal.

New year celebrations around the world share three universal themes that people tend to observe regardless of their culture: having fun, renewing oneself and building community.
Exploring these three universal themes is something that can be done in Phuket not only during one of the new year periods, but any time, throughout the year, namely through a beneficial activity called “Facilitated Drum Circle”.

To me it’s an event similar to a new year celebration in itself. This is a musical event where all participants play a drum or hand percussion together while sitting in a circle. No musical experience is required, a facilitator provides the appropriate guidance for all participants.

The fun element is always present in a drum circle. Participating in a rhythm orchestra is a liberating experience for many. In this activity people tap into their hidden artist, and express themselves with freedom. People from all walks of life discover that they HAVE rhythm, and that they CAN play! This is more than fun, it’s musical empowerment.

Renewal is another aspect of drum circles. The rhythmic pulsations of a rhythm event reach the bodies of participants and release tension in their bodies. The deep sounds of drums pave the way to relaxation, well being, and clear thinking. Renewal and change become a real possibility when our mind is calm and carefree.

The drum circle is a powerful community builder. It is not just intercultural fun, it is intergenerational fun too. Grandparents and grandchildren participate in an event where they have as much fun as each other. Group rhythm is a bonding experience that brings people together in musical collaboration. Every drum circle is a small community that expresses it’s voice with a unique musical creation.

If you want to schedule a facilitated drumming event for your group contact SYNERGY EVENTS. If you want to enjoy a free public drum circle, come to the next “Phuket Drum Circle” event on April 10th in Naiharn beach. Details are on Facebook. The rhythm of community, renewal, and fun, are calling you. Do you hear the drum call?

Marco Monti is a drum circle facilitator and founder of the drumming event company SYNERGY EVENTS Co., Ltd. He is also the founder of the free and open group “Phuket Drum Circle” (on Facebook). He is a member of the Drum Circle Facilitator’s Guild, holding an M.A. in Psychology from the California Institute for Human Science. www.synergydrum.com info@ synergydrum.com Tel.
