Rhodes to Fit

Salesman teams up with RPM’s Hayden Rhodes to reclaim his waist

Meet Andrew “Andy” Joyce.

Sales extraordinnaire, husband, father, and former pro golfer and swimmer. When Andy first arrived to Thailand in 2009, he was a svelt 87kg. During his time in the Kingdom, the Brit at one point maxed-out at 120kg thanks to what he says was just “too much of the good life”.

After a series of triathlons and sporadic training regiments, Andy was able to slim down to 105kg, where he has more-or-less remained for the last two years.

With the help of Hayden Rhodes, the RPM Health Club Manager, Andy plans to tackle the remaining 20 kg in a 90-day challenge. Andy’s goal is, by Christmas, to reach a level of fitness and weight that he is not only comfortable with but can also maintain.

“One of the things you mentioned that you’d like to work on is getting really honest about the health of your body and being strong and fit for life and the life of your daughter. You also touched on getting honest about your relationship to food”, Rhodes told Andy in an email shortly before they started.

“In this approach, we will explore compulsions as a gift. Approaching them with curiosity. Do you know what is amazing about curiosity? There is no judgement in it,” Rhodes wrote.

Rhodes is known the world-over as a fitness guru who comes from a different perspective and trains his clients to look at things with curiosity.

The old adage of cardiovascular exercises (i.e. running and cycling) to lose weight is, according to Hayden, just one very small piece of the puzzle. Instead, Hayden has Andy doing strength circuits with short but intense bursts of weight lifting.

“I already feel a lot stronger,” Andy says, “With personal trainers in the past, I had a lot of aches and pains. I could barely walk the next day. With Hayden, I have all the ‘good pain’ but am still able to function and make great stride in my fitness.”

In addition to his participation in Sober for October (no drinking for one month), Andy has also overhauled his nutrition. With a wife that cooks healthy meals for dinner, Andy’s problem was during breakfast where he would eat anything in sight in the morning madness of dropping off his kids at school and going to work.

“Hayden makes you do a pie chart with percentages of what you should eat. I could have all this delicious stuff in the morning and it’s actually healthy for me, like smoked salmon, poached eggs, avocado,” he says.

The Phuket News will be following Andy’s progress as Rhodes helps him slim down just in time for the holidays. So far, Andy remains positive about his progress and goals.

“With [Hayden] this is more about regulating a lifestyle so you still get the results you want but still have fun,” Andy says.
