Raging fire destroys wing of Patong hotel

PHUKET: Claude de Crissey, the owner of the Royal Phawadee Village Resort has told The Phuket News that based on initial investigation, this morning’s (December 26) early morning fire at the resort had seemed to start from a faulty electric cable, but that he was waiting on results from an investigation conducted by the Forensic Police.

“I don’t know what happened, but an electricity cable caught fire at about 5.30 am and continued to spread.”

Seven of the guest rooms were affected, with five completely destroyed by the blaze that ravaged a wing of the hotel at approximately 5.30 am.

Luckily none of the guests were injured in the early morning fire, but several guests lost all their belongings.

“Two or three customers have lost luggage,”said Mr de Chrissey, “the rest of them managed to take their belongings with them after the fire started.”

The fire also blew out a window from one of the rooms, which led to the blaze spreading to the neighbouring hotel, the Silver Resortel.

“Damage was caused to one or two of their rooms and actually some of those guests are now staying at the Royal Phawadee Village Resort.”

Meanwhile guests from the Royal Phawadee Village Resort whose rooms were destroyed by the fire have been relocated to the Holiday Inn. Mr de Crissey is paying their bills and will also pay for replacement of burned belongings.

“One of the major problems is that my hotel is fully booked for the next two weeks, so I will have to find somewhere for them. I will do my best...” said Mr de Crissey.

The Royal Phawadee Village Resort is still open, as just a wing of the large resort was affected by the fire. Mr de Crissey explained, “It is only the exterior of the resort which is wooden, the interior is a concrete structure.”
