Surasri Jupmatta, 20, from Prachuab Khirikhan was riding his bike past Wat Kosit Wiharn on Thepkasattri Rd in Phuket Town when he apparently ran out of fuel.
He was attacked by a group passing on motorbikes. Mr Surasri was stabbed twice, once in the head.
His attackers rode away, leaving him bleeding on the road with the knife sticking out of his head. He died not long after being taken to hospital.
Investigators yesterday tracked down Sutjai Trirat, 26, at his home in Moo 6, Vichit.
He told officers that he and the others had been drinking beer at Laem Hin, following which they stopped to get fuel on Dibuk Rd. Riding on the back of his bike was Rakchat "Neung" Thongbai, 26, also known as "Luangpor" or "revered father", indicating he was the leader of the gang.
From the gas station they drove along Thepkrassattri road towards the Rajabhat University Phuket intersection. As they passed Wat Kosit Wiharn, they saw Mr Surasri pushing his bike along the road.
Rakchat told Sutjai to turn around an go back to Mr Surasri. The rest of the gang followed.
Rakchat jumped off the bike and, as other members of the gang beat Mr Surasri, Rakchat stabbed him twice, the second time jamming the knife into his head, the fatal blow. Rakchat then jumped back on the bike and told Sutjai to race away from the scene.
Police are now searching for Rakchat.
