The new no-parking zone from 7am to 6pm on the east side of Yaowarat Road is designed to improve traffic flow around the congested area, but the 30 or so vendors said customers are now not able to park directly outside their stall, so are going elsewhere for food.
As well as the Vachira Hospital section of the road, there are three other new no-parking areas along Yaowarat Rd – opposite the TMB bank, in front of the mini mart and Yaowarat Apartment.
Phuket City Municipality officer Pairoth Rompannapong met with the vendors at the Municipality office yesterday (May 21) to discuss the problem, and the vendors presented a report.
The vendors also suggested the no-parking time be changed from 7am to 9am, and 4pm to 6pm only, around the busiest traffic times.
Thawatchai Thongmung, the Phuket City municipal clerk, said, “Phuket has a lot of vehicles now. We set up the sign to co-operate with the police.
“Any changes must be agreed upon by both police and the municipality. We will consider the vendors’ views.
“Whatever happens, the traffic flow must be improved in that area.”
