The raising of the Lantern Pole at each shrine is the first ceremony of the Festival.

The raising of the Lantern Pole at each shrine is the first ceremony of the Festival.

Over the following 10 days the island will see a riot of parades with massive amounts of firecrackers and "mah song" – steeds of the gods – mortifying their flesh with axes, maces, and a variety of artifacts inserted through cuts in their cheeks or hung by hooks from the chests or backs.

For a comprehensive background on the festival, see the brochure here, prepared by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (and reproduced with its kind permission), which gives more information on the history of this fascinating festival, a timetable of all the events, and maps of parade routes.
