Phuket underpass on target to open April 9

PHUKET: More than a year behind its original deadline for completion, the Sam Kong Underpass on the bypass road is on schedule to open to traffic on April 9, the project’s lead engineer told The Phuket News today (Mar 11).

“Construction is going well. We have not encountered any more major obstacles to completion, and the tunnel itself is now done,” said Chalermpon Wongkietkun, Project Engineer from the Highways Department Phuket office.

“Workers are now paving the ramps at both ends of the tunnel, which we will be able to open to traffic on April 9,” he said.

After the tunnel work is complete, work will begin on paving the ground-level lanes that pass the project site.

“We will pave new road surfaces in front of Tesco Lotus (southbound), then we will pave the lanes in front of Aphodite (northbound,’ Mr Chalermpon said.

“We will issue notices soon announcing when we will begin those road works,” he added.

The project has suffered a slew of delays sin work began, resulting in repeated extended deadlines for the contractor, Vivat Construction Co Ltd, to complete the underpass.

The latest hurdles came in January, when a section of the southbound lanes dangerously collapsed, forcing police to close the road intersection until emergency repairs were made. (See story here.)

Fritz Pinguin. You made a good suggestion. Traffic circles work mostly better than traffic lights at such kind of traffic locations.
At least the Provincial authorities could give that a try first.

Seen the number of installed traffic lights in Rawai, Naiharn, and more locations, they all are not functioning, just flashing red or yellow. Waist of installation money.

Many years ago they inst...

Passed by the Sam Kong underpass works today.
Just 15 working days until 09 April,( exclusive Sundays) and still so much to do.
Not the slightest chance I can drive that underpass op 10 April.

@KCPhuket: Maybe they should take the traffic lights away and do a round-about on top of the tunnel?

A real opening, a soft opening, or a temporarily opening?

benvenuto | 11 March 2016 - 22:44:21

Just more spin from the Vivat engineer. He now presents the tunnel opening date as if this was always the 'completion date' but surely the only date that matters is the total completion date including above ground paving. What is the proposed total completion date when the chaotic disruption caused by Vivat's incompetence finally comes to an end? Can PN advise if Vivat are still expect...
