Capt Wattanatorn Bumrungthin of the Kathu Police was notified at 3am this morning of a shooting incident in front of the Phuket Villa housing complex on Phra Phuket Kaew Rd in Kathu where it was reported one man had died from gunshot wounds.

Capt Wattanatorn told The Phuket News today, “Our investigation team and Kusoldhram rescue workers arrived at the scene to find a yellow-plated tuk-tuk with two bullet holes in its side window and two bullets in the rear view mirror. Inside the tuk-tuk was the driver sitting dead in his seat.”

I checked the surrounding area but found no bullets or bullet casings. The victim’s body was taken to Vachira Hospital,” Capt Wattanatorn said.

Capt Wattanatorn later confirmed that the victim was Mr Sakol Srisompotch, 58, Patong Tuk-Tuk Club President who had been shot four times.

We believe the suspect was driving a motorbike when he shot Mr Sakol four times. Mr Sakol died instantly at the wheel of his vehicle,” Capt Wattanatorn said.

We believe Mr Sakol must have had some personal issues regarding the Patong Tuk-Tuk Club and this was the motive behind the shooting,” he added.

Mr Sakol was one of the leaders of the protest that saw all three main roads into Patong blockaded by taxi and tuk-tuk drivers in 2014. (See story here.)

Mr Sakol claimed unfair treatment by police, who were alleged to be corrupt in their overlooking illegal taxis still operating in the key tourist town. (See stories here and here.)

Yes Joe, I like most things here, but all you see here at PN is commentary on criminals, accidents, deaths and other negative news, with little to no mention of the corruption and underlying imcompetence of Thai officials to take any meaningful action to address any of it. I love Phuket, that is why I live here, and most things range from acceptable to very good....but I will continue to rail on ...

unfortunately people will continue to be assassinated until the law JAILS people who are breaking the law. money may save a jail term but it doesnt stop crime, it gives the corrupt and criminals more lattitude to do as they please. phuket, thailand, you reap what you sow. until the law is applied swiftly and justly to both the wealthy and the rank and file, anarchy will prevail.

Ed...geez man, is there anyone or anything that you like? Life here seems to tick over nicely despite your defamatory remarks that have no basis in fact. If there were, you should be doing something about it rather than whinging on daily basis here.

This story just provides more testimony (as if thet was needed) that tuktuk/public transport scum are one of the largest criminal elementsin Phuket. And, once again, the impotent Thai police are the root cause of nearly all problems here in Phuket...because they are worthless, and everyone knows it, and are complicit in all illegal activities here.

"smacks" - No Sir, your comment is indeed very ignorant and stupid. Why is it anti-us to mention facts? You just proved, you are the one with stupid comments and obviously dont read or follow the news! If you were a bit subjective and quite possibly intelligent, you would know that several police murders has been happening lately. So although you have been living most of your life in the...

Rather stupid comment kjm! Your anti-US bias is showing. I'm afraid you watch too many movies. Lived in the US most of my life, 24 years of that in the US Air Force, and have yet to have a gun pulled on me, or for that matter, have yet to see one pulled on anyone.

It's about time the police did daily random stop checks on taxi/tuk tuk drivers to check for weapons, oh hold on! That would mean the traffic police having to do some work, never happen! Strange how the police in charge of drugs seem to be able to do their job and we see multiple drugs arrest every week but we never see police arresting drunk drivers, speeding drivers, dangerous drivers?

HAVE TO AGREE WITH KURT. LUCKILY NO OTHER PERSONS WERE HARMED AND THIS IS INDEED TYPICAL THAI DISPUTE RESOLUTION AND TOURIST SHOULD SERIOUSLY CONSIDER IF IT IS WORTH RISKING YOUR LIFE VISITING PHUKET OR KRABI/KOH SAMUI ETC ETC WHEN THERE IS A HUGE RISK OF BEING COLLATERAL DAMAGE. HAVING SAID THAT, THEN I DOUBT IF ITS ANY SAFER TO VISIT USA WITH ALL THE GUN HORNY POLICE MEN/WOMEN AND USUAL RED NECK...

Wow, a tuk tuk president assassinated.
Lucky that there were no tourists in his tuk tuk.
An example of the ultimate thai dispute, as you can read.
Tourists, be aware on Phuket!
