Tout dumps slow loris with tourist, evades arrest at Kata Beach

PHUKET: A slow loris tout dumped the slow loris he was carrying with a tourist then ran away to avoid arrest at Kata Beach yesterday afternoon (Jan 14).

Piyawat Sukon, Chief of the Khao Phra Thaew Non-Hunting Area Conservation Centre in Thalang, led a team of officers to Kata Beach yesterday after receiving tip-offs from tourists.

The tip-offs reported that a tout was walking along the beach and charging tourists to have their photos taken with a slow loris.

When Mr Piyawat and his team arrived at the beach, still dressed in their uniforms, as is required when performing official duties, they saw the tout on the sand, but much further along the beach.

“We nearly caught him,” Mr Piyawat told The Phuket News.

“We believe that he was tipped off by other vendors on the beach as we were heading up the beach to catch him,” he said.

The tout left the slow loris he had in hand and ran off on foot, Mr Piyawat explained.

Mr Piyawat, on behalf of the DNP, filed formal report of the incident to the Karon Police.

“My officials saw his face. We believe that we have seen this man before,” Mr Piyawat said.

“We have given a description to the Karon Police for them to find him, and we have brought the slow loris back with us to Khao Phra Thaew,” he added.

Local police were not available to assist the team yesterday, he said.

“I have been coordinating with local municipalities and police about stopping illegal slow loris touts, but they continue all around Phuket because the benefit is worth it. The fine is so low,” he said.

Mr Piyawat thanked tourists for providing the tip-off and welcomed anyone to report sightings of illegal possession and mistreatment of wild animals directly to him on 089-8737749.
“You can report these sightings to me directly. I speak basic English, if you are a foreigner, please speak simply and say what animal you saw, where, and when, or other important details,” he added.

Get it right. Again check the act. No point in making a comment when you dont know what you're talking about. If you're unsure of a procedure, just ring and ask the Police.

I think my know everything thai, has a very short, or damaged, memory, a very quick search throws this up, Wednesday 25 September 2013... Phuket police arrest third loris tout on Bangla Rd after Rihanna photo. Seems, well at least to me, and I suspect many others, it is indeed a police job.

Jor12 | 18 January 2019 - 08:09:22

As the comments are comical they can only be from a clown. As stated, it is not a Police job, so unless the law has been changed recently, the comment is relevant. One doesn't need to be a rocket scientist, but just a modicum of common sense

"It's not the Police's job you clown," can't debate intelligently, or as an adult, so once again we see the expert, on all things Thai, resort to more name calling. I might be a dumd a*se, but I would have thought that if someone is breaking the law then it would be a police job, strange that it isn't, well at least not according to our Thai expert on everything.

And khun ...: Mr Piyawat called in for police assistance, that was not available. And, later he did provide the Karon police with description of the culprit to find him.
So, don't tell us here that the thai Official mr Piyawat doesn't know what the duties are of the RTP. I don't believe mr Piyawat can be seen as a clown as well? Right?

Kurt | 16 January 2019 - 10:44:04

No need to lower yourself by calling people names, khun ..... The operation was wrongly conducted, because with all the manpower they didn't catch 1 single suspect. Right? And: tell us, for what is there a RTP force? You list about what the RTP law enforcement is not meant for becomes very long.

Jor12 | 16 January 2019 - 07:41:50

It's not the Police's job you clown. How do you know how the operation was conducted?

Kurt | 15 January 2019 - 13:09:53

Dressed in uniforms, not plain clothed. No local police available ( of course not, they are paid for not being available).
Why not heading up to the beach from different directions to catch the culprit? Pffff. What kind of training these officials have gone through?
