Man fined B500 for ghost-driving on Thepkrasattri Rd

PHUKET: A man has been fined B500 for driving his car in the wrong direction along a busy section of Thepkrasattri Rd in Koh Kaew on Monday (June 27).

Police confirmed the fine yesterday after tracking down the man, whose name was not released to the public.

The man, “Mr A”, 35, was approached by Phuket City Police officers at his home (area undisclosed) yesterday afternoon, said a report of his arrest.

Police were made aware of Mr A’s driving antics on Monday after a clip was posted online showing his yellow Mitsubishi Lancer driving in the wrong direction along the southbound lanes of Thepkrasattri Rd at about 3:30pm.

He drove along the wrong side of the road for about 200 metres until the U-turn at Baan Sapam, where he crossed the lanes in order to move to the correct side of the road for the direction he was travelling.

“Subsequently, Pol Lt Col Thanapisit Muangchan, Deputy Commander (Inspector) of Phuket City Police Station, along with others conducted an in-depth investigation,” said the police release issued late yesterday.

Mr A was taken to Phuket City Police Station and fined B500 for his traffic violation.

Mr A assured officers that he would not violate traffic rules again and said that he regretted this incident, said the police report.

Phuket City Police Col Sarawut Chuprasit said “he did not hesitate” after being informed of the incident and had ordered officers to track down the car through its licence plate.

“There are many cars on the road, so respecting traffic rules is important, because it makes it safer for people and tourists [sic],” Col Sarawut said.

I nearly took out a ghost riding motorbike this evening. Its hard enough driving the right way in traffic without taking these idiots into consideration. Natural selection at work but I don't want to be part of the process

@Capripornball Yes I like to comment/respond on foolish comments. Especially on those comments made by fools who would like to see everything being handled/regulated as in their own country. So why even moving here if someone missing his home country standards so much ?

As soon as the word gets out that you will lose your bike (ghost-riding, speeding, noisy aftermarket pipes, running red lights), people will think twice before riding like .... No license..? then you lose your bike/car, and can pick it up once you have a valid license and pay the 3,000 impound/storage fine. If nothing changes, people will forever drive like ....

@Dekass, is all you ever do is comment on comments? NASA is exactly right as to what is needed, for exactly the reason you point out...financial hardship. Your idea is lame, "don't fine Somchai, he can't afford it". I promise you, take away Somchai's motorbike for riding like an ..., and charge him 5,000 to get it back, no matter how long it takes him to pay it off.

Christysweet, I am not sure or it is their not-functional uniform. Afterall, they all have shaven heads to release heat, like dogs through their tongue. It is just RTP subculture not to blink eyes, avoid softly doing duties they sworn in for it. RTP stand is: 'When I do something, how much i can get out of it to buy my next promotion'? Or buy a car above my financial status.

The purpose of a fine is dual. 1: Punishment ( law enforcement). 2: To discourage the traffic violater to do it again. For that a fine needs to be felt in wallet. Right? 500B is a joke. The culprit later at home laugh about it with family and friends. The fines and seizure vehicles until fine is fully paid, as suggested by Nasa12 therefore are realistic. In Europe a helmet fine is 100 Euro.

Perhaps a Thai solution for solving the unlawful ghost riding. Make it legal! 1: It saves face of the Thai police, in here docile doing nothing about it. 2: Road users start riding more cautious in order not to hit them. :-)

The reason cops are reluctant to leave their AC boxes is the absurdly tight, polyester blend, long- sleeved uniforms they are forced to wear in 34 degree heat and 85% humidity.. Put traffic cops in loose cotton shorts and t- shirts FFS.

Yesterday, after blocking the left hand lane to cars turning left at the light, westerner in a white jeep at the Thalang Tesco taligated me, blew his horn angrily and then cussed me out that I was to move left out of the motorcycle lane so he could pass other cars illegally, which would have had me running into cars turning left from Tesco onto the road. F -off Mr '24 Hour Party Phuk...

At the big intersection at Koh Kaew it's a free for all. Motorbikes ghost ride all the way from Boat Lagoon all day long. There is a Police box at the intersection. The Police just watch all the chaos unfolding and don't do a thing. Hopeless!

Nasa12, very good suggestion. Unfortunately Thailand has a lazy not caring police mentality, and the fine levels are still from many decennia ago. Actually Thailand law enforcement still lives in that time.Name of the culptri was not mentione. Perhaps de road pirate was the husband van the sister in law of a neighbor. So, soft warning/fine.

Why not fined whit 5000 bath, this maybe stop this lazy driver on the roads. Use some big fined: seatbelt 10.000+ bath, us Mobil when driving 10.000+ bath, red light 10.000+ bath +++ and seiz the car motorcycle until they have paid the fines.

Ghost riding with a car, and even crossing the road as the photo shows, and just a B500 fine for this criminal behavior what could have been turned out into a car accident, costing lifes? ????
