Once again, Phuket is in the running for honours in one of the country's top talent shows, The Star 7, thanks to teenager Pavida Moroggi.
Fifteen-year-old Pavida - known to her friends as Silvy - was inspired to enter the Thaliand-wide talent contest by watching Phuket idol Witchayanee “Nong Kaem” Piaklin win The Star 4 in 2008.
Silvy, who is half-Thai, half-Italian, and studies at Kajornkietsuksa School, lives with her mother, Somkiat Janton, who runs a tour counter in Kata. Silvy's father died when she was 10.
Now she has a serious chance at national stardom. But first she must get through the final rounds on TV.
The competition will continue for another four sessions, with one competitor being eliminated each time until the judges choose from the final three.
Silvy's secret weapon - like her idol Nong Kaem - is a very powerful, controlled voice; she has been taking singing classes at the Yamaha School since she was eight years old.
Anyone wishing to boost Silvy's chances can vote for her during the show, on Thai TV Channel 9 in Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9pm. To vote, send the message *4 to Tel 4242899, or call *49304.
