Phuket pushes to pilot Digital Nomad visa

PHUKET: Rewat Areerob, President of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO, or OrBorJor) has submitted a formal request to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and to the Minister of Foreign Affairs to create a ‘Digital Nomad’ visa for international visitors  travelling to Phuket.

By The Phuket News

Friday 18 March 2022, 04:25PM

The request was announced by the Phuket Info Center, operated by the Phuket office of the Ministry of Interior, earlier today.

The PPAO itself and Mr Rewat both have yet to announce that the request has been made.

In the notices posted by the Phuket Info Center, Mr Rewat asked for Phuket to pilot a new visa called “Phuket X Community for Digital NOMADs Visa”.

Under the proposed visa, applicants must live in Phuket for six months to one year. They will be issued a work permit automatically, be able to open a savings account and own up to three vehicles, and purchase health insurance while traveling in Thailand.

“Digital NOMADs are foreign tourists working at the world’s leading companies in the fields of Digital, IT and Internet. They are a group of people who live, travel and work at the same time, using the Internet as the main tool for earning money,” Mr Rewat explained in the notices.

“They may have their own online business, freelance, or work on projects. of companies that can work online. For example, programmers, web designers, graphic designers, online marketers, etc,” he added.

“Most Digital NOMADs will spend a long time in a foreign country with high income and spending power,” he pointed out.

“If the Phuket X Community for Digital NOMADs Visa push is successful, we will develop a new source of income for Phuket and help to stimulate tourism and the creative economy.

“It will create new business opportunities for Phuket such as co-working spaces, cafes, restaurants and various activities that NOMADs love,” Mr Rewat added.

“This would make a difference for Thailand in the Asean region, and create a form of income for Phuket that does not depend on seasonal tourists or be affected by the outbreak of COVID-19 anymore. These people will spend in the province throughout the year,” Mr Rewat said.

Your right about Patong, I do most of my stuff there , like 90 day etc, but have to go to Phuket town for visa renewal and proof of residence for license’s etc

christysweet | 21 March 2022 - 18:56:17

I have asked for a receipt at the Patong office and they refused and then refused to give me the certificate telling me to go downtown. This certificate should only need be issued once and various bureaucratic entities should accept a copy once the original can be viewed. It should only need reissuing upon change of address, but noooooooo
Thai Driver's license has pp#, hotel has to report...

maverick | 21 March 2022 - 16:27:09

Christy@ you are correct certificate of residence is free if you ask for a receipt that normally sorts it out they will just keep you waiting half an hour. The reporting required if you leave province has fallen away haven’t done it for 2 years don’t carry passport just driving license so hotel know you are resident

christysweet | 21 March 2022 - 12:03:33

I hear the price of the Residency Certificate- which should be free, is up to 500 baht in some offices. Also if one leaves the province a report back conducted in person requiring all the docs, TM-29- or is it TM -30 Not all of us have Thai partners to smooth the road. If you are not married to a Thai and own your house- the visits can number half a dozen yearly or more easily.

@Maverick. "cynics are out in force"? With respect for your comment, we do our own visa renewals same way as you. Point is this article topic: 'Phuket PUSHES to digital Nomad Visa'. 1st: Immigration digital stuff is unreliable ( see simple 90 day reports). 2nd: The thoughts of mr Rewatt are not to please foreigners. The PUSH is to make more money with visa procedures.

maverick | 21 March 2022 - 07:46:43

Wow, cynics are out in force - I pay my annual visa renewal for myself and my wife and nothing else - slipped over my 90 day deadline mistakenly, recently no issue after a polite apology. Thou doth protest too much - there are another 225 countries out there for those who don’t like

christysweet | 20 March 2022 - 13:35:59

All the visa rules are designed to make you visit the Imm office incessantly so you can be nickel and dimed to death when it would help the country so much more to have high spending expats who aren't going to put up with that crap. Look to Malaysia's visa programs as a model -let expats volunteer, too.

christysweet | 20 March 2022 - 13:27:45

The 90 day 'sex offender' styled registry of address is a burden that exist only to 'coffee money' foreigners to death. Of course while Tland offers prostitutes as a draw, it can enact any absurd rule it wants. Thanks Sex-pats

Kurt | 20 March 2022 - 11:34:29

BKK is already working ( again) out a 5 year visa for which you still have to go yearly to renew, cost 10,000B per year. They skip the 90 day report for you, wow! Big deal. All visa/working permit changes they have in mind is not intended to please/accomodate the foreigner, but just milk them financially. They just try to wrap it up in a thai sweet way and think foreigners are dumb.

Kurt | 20 March 2022 - 11:25:38

Maverick@, I am very well aware of the existing work technicallities. However, now mr Rewatt comes up with something new to add. Focussing on foreigners high income/spending power, new source of income for Phuket. It is all wine in old bags + added a extra money drain on foreigners. What else for? Not to servive the foreigners, but to milk them. BKK is already working out someting too. ......

christysweet | 19 March 2022 - 22:25:39

Yes to this forward looking plan that does not involve tourism. More of the same please.

Capricornball | 19 March 2022 - 21:21:36

How strange, Rawat Areerob actually has some kind of vision that makes sense... not like the rest of these out of touch political hacks that tell everyone they need to do something, but offer no plan or guidance. It would be great if Khun Rawat could bring common sense and efficiency to the other types of visas, like trashing the 90-day check ins for retirement visas.

SadButTrue | 19 March 2022 - 11:45:14

As a digital nomad, I don't want to pay tax, but get nothing from government in exchange and get less rights then a hobo. Also I don't have permanent job, so it is not applicable for me.
Pay taxes, enjoy taxi mafia, overpriced healthcare, police checkpoints every 2km... Don't forget about risk of quarantine scam, which you also must pay for.
Enjoy your Digital Idiot visa, dirty fara...

thaibigfoot@gmail.com | 19 March 2022 - 10:51:24

As with most officially run websites, it won't work most of the time.

maverick | 19 March 2022 - 10:40:49

Kurt@ most large organizations require proof of entitlement to work in a given country. So a bit disingenuous and cynical to call this a money grab - many people including my daughter would like to base themselves here for part of the year but need a work permit - tax is a separate issue and depends on tax treaties - if they pay tax at home not necessary to pay tax here no double taxation.

JohnC | 19 March 2022 - 09:13:36

The island is already overflowing with foreigners making money on line without declaring that they are working while living here. This has been going on for years. Most that do are not high spenders either, hoarding what they make in offshore bank accounts so Thailand gets no benefits from it.

Kurt | 19 March 2022 - 08:34:15

... like what that Nomads Visa yearly costs. Afterall, their aim is to get money from you as a 'rich' foreigner. Don't see the whole thing as a nice gesture to you as a foereigner. At backround is the regimental control over you.

Kurt | 19 March 2022 - 08:29:22

Have a laptop, have a Digital Nomads Visa, and get trapped in paying taxes. Clever Thai thinking to get your money. A age 50+ better stick to Retirement Visa and work from home. Forget that '3 car nonsense' and that 'may have a bankaccount', brought up as exclusive specials while every Retiree MUST have a bankaccount. Besides, I think they didn't tell the whole story, like that...

Fascinated | 18 March 2022 - 18:53:16

Does this mean we will now be the hub of digital nomads now as well? Difficult to find space on the island for all of them. Expect an increase of 'man-buns' as well.

maverick | 18 March 2022 - 16:44:13

so anyone with a laptop basically .......doh !!
